DECISION ‘08

By Sara Weisman

I dropped the course.  I got there today and I was exhausted, and the baby started kicking me in the stomach, and I knew I couldn’t make it.  I just don’t want to push myself that hard.

Ugh.

Looks like I was too late to offer up my two cents, but I think you made the right decision. It seems that you have a bunch of considerations that you want to take into account but they don’t all hold equal weight. Taking care of yourself prior to the birth and spending time with your child should be paramount over pretty much anything. #1) Especially when you’re talking about a degree that doesn’t have an understood tangible benefit to your life. Your second and third reasons I don’t feel were compelling enough either since #2) No one who cares about you is going to hold it against you for stopping school because of your kid. That ranks high on the “valid excuses list”. #3) Enjoying your thesis is a rather selfish reason to deny yourself and your child the attention that you both need. And like you said, you can look into it on your own. I doubt you’re going to get what you’re looking for out of writing a paper.

Also, if you ever change your mind, it’s always possible to pick your degree (or one more relevant to what you decide you want to do) back up at a later date.
